Diabetic Foot Care

Why do I need to see a Podiatrist?

When living with Diabetes you may be aware that you have to take special care and attention to your body, such as regular eye, dental, and now feet checks.

With Diabetes there is a chance that you can develop nerve damage. This is known as Neuropathy, and is typically caused by poorly controlled blood sugar levels, or from having your condition for many years. Due to this it is essential that you know whether the nerves in your feet are functioning correctly and that you are aware if any injury occurs.

Another common problem is that the vascular supply to the feet can become restricted. This can lead to poor wound healing rates and in extreme examples can lead to the loss of toes or foot. This is thankfully uncommon, but we do think it is helpful for you to know your diabetic risk status by getting your feet checked by our podiatrist.

In many most instances you will only need to have a Diabetic Foot Assessment once every 12 months, and at your appointment your podiatrist will help teach you more on how to care for your feet and avoid injuries.

If you are Diabetic and have not seen a podiatrist, we would encourage you to book an appointment to have them checked over. They are equally as important as your eyes and teeth, which we all get regularly tested.
